"ONE WORLD"
12/29/21
Throughout 2020 to 2021 news of hate crimes began to see a potent rise. From the murder of George Floyd, and Brianna Taylor to the current defacing of spaces owned by people of color like the Black wall Street Gallery in soho NY, more than ever before it is clear the world is divided by racism, prejudice, and hate based on difference. “ONE WORLD” (OW) is a mural that reimagines a more unified world through color, diversity, and setting conveying ideas of peace, empathy, understanding, and a celebration of difference. Using multiple point perspective, the illustration is visually designed to act as an extension of the café space, while paying homage to existing structures across UB’s North campus such as Capen, North halls, and the Student Commons. Across the illustration will be wooden figures installed to be raised approximately, 5” to 10” off the surface giving a pop-out element to enable 3-D immersion. Each pop-out also encourages student participation as students will be prompted to write or draw on sticker paper (available on the side of the mural), which they can place on the pop-out figures. The prompt for these drawings/written responses will be an engagement with 3 questions:
1. What is one thing you are grateful for?
2. What is your strongest feeling right now?
3. What brings you joy?
